The National Health Service Pension Scheme

One of the factors some people take into account when applying for a job is whether they will be able to join the company pension scheme and, if they can, is it any good.

The NHS offers an excellent final salary pension for its employees and if you apply to join South Western Ambulance Service, and are successful, you will be entitled to join it from the first day of your employment.

Your contribution will be 5% or 6% depending on your job with the Ambulance Service but this will only cost you about 3.5% after tax and national insurance exemptions. The NHS and the Government contribute an additional 16.5% of your pay towards your pension.

The most obvious benefit to you will be your pension, which you can take at age 60, and which, once you start to receive it, will be protected against inflation. Your pension will be calculated using your salary at or near retirement. In addition you will receive a tax-free lump sum equivalent to three times your annual pension.

The scheme is open to all staff whatever hours you work and also provides death in service cover of twice your annual salary from the first day of employment.

There are other benefits of joining the scheme which will be explained to you at your induction if you are successful.

Membership of the scheme is not compulsory and you are advised to seek independent financial advice if you are in any doubt as to whether to join.

If you join the scheme and then leave it you can have a refund of contributions if you leave within two years. If you pay for over two years your contributions will be frozen and you will receive a pension at age 60.
