Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

Information for GPs and Clinicians

The Accident and Emergency Service

Emergency ambulance responses are provided by ambulances usually crewed by a paramedic and technician or a rapid response car with a paramedic. In the west country, emergency responders are also used in rural areas - always backed up by the nearest available ambulance resource.

Ambulance crews are trained to a high standard and are expected by South Western Ambulance Service to deliver high quality out of hospital care in accordance with Trust clinical guidelines and procedures. Paramedics and technicians are accountable to the Trust’s management, however support and encouragement from other medical professionals is always welcome.

There are four basic grades of emergency personnel, in order of seniority:

  • Paramedic Supervisors / Clinical Support Officers
  • Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs)
  • Paramedics
  • Technicians

All have attained differing levels of clinical practice, all of which include the Ambulance Aid Certificate (accredited by the Institute of Health and Care Development ).
