Patient Information Leaflets

Providing accurate and accessible information to the pubic and our patients is an important aspect of the wide range of care we provide across the South West. Leaflets on the most common causes of infection can be downloaded by clicking on the links below:

Further information on infection prevention and control, including detailed information on infections is available from the Health Protection Agency (HPA)

Hand Hygiene

Improving hand hygiene saves lives. Every year 5000 people die as a result of infections that have been acquired whilst being cared for within the NHS, costing over £1 billion. Research has proven that improving hand hygiene is the single most effective method of preventing cross-infection. Our clinicians are required to carry a personal dispenser of alcohol handrub on their belts at all times, to ensure they always have the facilities to clean their hands. Examination gloves are worn when there may be a risk of cross contamination whilst delivering patient care.

The Trust fully support and promote patients asking our clinicians whether they have cleaned their hands, if they are at all unsure. It’s okay to ask!

Bare Below the Elbows

Although there is no conclusive evidence that uniforms pose a significant hazard in the spread of infection, the Trust have implemented uniform guidance provided by the Department of Health. Staff must wear uniform should be worn according to the Trusts uniform policy, and ensure a clean set is worn for each shift. The guidance supports the principle that staff should be ‘bare below the elbows’ when delivering care. Due to the nature of our work, there will however be occasions when staff are required to wear long sleeved high visibility jackets for their own safety and protection, under Health and Safety legislation.

Patient Transfers

Information regarding the transfer of patients who may be at risk of transmitting, or susceptible to acquiring an infection, is contained within the Infection Prevention and Control Policy
