Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

Stoke Management

Thrombolysis is an effective evidence-based treatment for cases of ischaemic stroke. It reduces long-term disability and improves clinical outcome by dissolving the clot in the cerebral circulation. Patients who would otherwise have been left with a permanent disability have the potential to walk out of hospital in just 36hrs. However, the therapeutic window is narrow; the thrombolytic must be administered within three to six hours of the onset of symptoms. Through the use of the FAST-Track protocol, the ambulance service can significantly increase the number of patients receiving specialist intervention.
