Why do Foundation Trusts have members?
Foundation Trusts are democratic organisations. Based on the concept of mutual organisations or cooperative societies, Foundation Trusts operate in the public interest. By having a membership which engages with the Trust and lets us know how they feel about the services we provide, makes us more accountable to the local community.
What are the benefits of becoming a member?
As a member you can expect:
- Regular jargon free communications to keep you informed about your ambulance service.
- To be able to take advantage of a range of offers available through NHS Discounts.
- Information on a range of health issues and health promotions topics.
- Free health screening at planned events such as blood pressure or blood sugar checks.
- Opportunities to participate in surveys and consultations.
- Information and training for those who want to find out about becoming a Governor.
- The chance to stand for election to the Council of Governors and to vote for somebody to represent you no the council.
The main benefit of being a member is that you can make your voice heard. In doing so, you can help us to help you by continually striving to improve our performance.

What does being a member mean for you?
Membership is free and the level of your involvement is entirely up to you. We therefore have three levels of membership:
Level 1: simply receive a regular newsletter about the Trust’s activities.
Level 2: participate in consultations and surveys to have a direct say in the future of the Trust.
Level 3: stand for election to the Council of Governors.
If you are already a member of any other Foundation Trust you can still become a member of our Foundation Trust, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria.
To be a member, you must:
- Be over 16.
- Live, or own a second home, in Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset or Somerset.
- Not have a record of aggressive or violent behaviour against any of the Trust’s employees, have been dismissed from employment by the Trust, or been removed as a member of another Foundation Trust.
