Responders

Community Engagement Department

The Community Engagement Team operate to provide support to responders across the Trust. Local Cullumpton GP and Executive Medical Director Dr. Andy Smith has board level responsibility for responders, whilst Deputy Clinical Director Adrian South is responsible for providing senior support to the department.

The team is normally led by Senior Community Engagement Manager Martyn Callow. However, Community Engagement Officer for Devon Ian Knight is currently acting into this role whilst Martyn is on leave.

Responders in each county are supported by a dedicated Community Engagement Officer. In addition, Community Engagement Officer - Community Resuscitation Development Rob Horton works in Devon to support our static sites and the work of responders, with Tom Jackson fulfilling a similar role within Dorset and Somerset. Rob is currently also undertaking a range of special projects to improve the dispatch of responders and to enable better auditing of the incidents attended.

Community Engagement Administrator Natalie Williams is responsible for all administrative functions; please contact Natalie if you are unsure of who you need to speak to.

Responder Liaison Officers

Responder Liaison Officers (RLOs) provide a vital link between responders in their local area and the Community Engagement Officers. RLOs are ambulance clinicians who volunteer to take on the additional role, which includes acting as the communication link, providing professional and emotional support, training and the replacement of equipment and consumables.

Many RLOs support a number of groups, and every month support group meetings and training sessions. As well as supporting community responders, many also work with our Fire Service Co-Responders and Establishment Based Responders, with some also attending incidents whilst off duty, as Staff Responders.
