IHCD Advanced Driver Training Course

Landrover Image 1 Landrover Image 2

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is offering an IHCD approved Advanced Driving Course. The course has been designed to recognise the required standards; and incorporates emergency response driving modules.

The course is a requirement for anyone wishing to join both the UK statutory ambulance service or the private sector; and is, in addition, of benefit to those already working within the private sector.

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is able to provide the course to individual customers, or to organisations who require their employees to drive to advanced standards. Customers who may benefit from this training include Lifeguard Services, Search and Rescue, Medical Officers, BASICS doctors and other medical professions who are required to use driving for the delivery of patient care, or who may be required to transport patients to other healthcare services.

Entry Criteria

Candidates must:

Demonstrate a legitimate reason to attend the course, and have the following driving abilities;

  • have held a Driving licence for at least 3 years;
  • have Category C1 on their Driving Licence (SWASFT can provide this training or recommend training organisations who can provide this training);
  • have no more than 6 penalty points on their licence, and no pending motoring convictions.
  • Course Content

    The course is carried out over a 3-week period, Monday to Friday; this period includes the required night drive. The vehicles used for Weeks 1 and 2 are all less than 3 years old and are relevant to the qualification gained. The Emergency Response Module is completed in operating front line ambulance vehicles, and these will be sourced from our standard fleet.

    Accommodation is not included in the course costs.

    Due to the intensity of the course and the amount of time spent driving it is recommended that students are accommodated close to the course venues, and we are able to recommend hotels that offer the Trust preferential rates.

    The Modules covered include:

  • Law and the Ambulance Driver;
  • Vehicle Daily Inspection and Pre Driving Checks;
  • Driver Attitude and Red Mist;
  • System of car control;
  • Observation skills; Acceleration sense;
  • Use of gears, Braking and Steering;
  • Reversing and Manoeuvring;
  • Skidding, include skid pan training;
  • Positioning, Cornering and Overtaking;
  • Night time driving;
  • Motorway driving;
  • Speed and Safety and Emergency response module.
  • In addition to this, and for an additional fee, we are able to provide Adverse Weather and Limited Traction driver training in Land Rover Discovery 4’s. This short 1 day course covers all aspects of driving in Snow, Ice, Floods and other situations where limited traction is available. The course is ideal for event cover, and companies using specialist vehicles such as the Land Rover Discovery.
