Responder information governance training

Information Governance (IG) is about meeting patient and public expectations about how we will manage and protect their personal data. If we do not meet these expectations, there can be consequences, for instance, people are party to information they should not have and the Trust could be fined.

We need to make sure all staff and volunteers are effectively trained and aware of their IG responsibilities, understanding how to meet both legal and NHS requirements in the course of their work for the Trust.

Nationally, the NHS has mandated that all staff complete IG training, including voluntary staff.

The IG training for responders involves the completion of a 30 minute on-line training module and test. Please follow the following steps.

Step 1: Register on the website

You will be asked what organisation you work for. Enter the code RYF and select 'SOUTH WESTERN AMBULANCE SERVICE NHS TRUST (RYF)' from the list;

For job role, select 'Voluntary Staff' at the bottom of the list;

For employee number, enter your 7 digit staff number;

For Department \ Directorate \ Division, select the relevant county from the list:

  • Delivery - Operations Somerset and your relevant county

Do you have a work email address? Answer No;

Input your name, contact details and password when prompted.

These steps should ensure you are now registered on the system and you should have a user name and password. You can now log onto the website to complete the training module, either using the links provided when registering or go back to the home page using the link above.

Step 2: Logging onto the website

  • Go to the NHS connecting for Health website:;
  • On the top right hand side of the page, enter your username and password;
  • The first time you log in, you will be asked to check your details to ensure that they are correct. Once checked, click 'update profile' at the bottom of the page;
  • You should now be on the home page. Across the top of the screen, click the 'Learning Tools' tab;
  • Click and expand the blue heading 'Information Governance and IG Management'. This should expand the list and show 3 courses below it;
  • Select the course 'Information Governance: The Beginners Guide'. This should have the word Mandatory next to it;
  • Follow the instructions for completing the course.

You can stop and re-join the course where you left off if needed. You can also take the test as many times as needed to get the 80% pass mark on the 10 multiple choice questions.

If you have any problems using the site, please email and we will get back to you as quickly as we can. Please note the office is only open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday.

For those without access to the Internet a paper alternative will be provided.

Paramedics and volunteers will be offering free blood pressure checks for any visitors to the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) stand this week at the Devon County Show. The team will also be doing CPR demonstrations and educating the public how to act fast and help save patients who may need quick action when they become ill.
