Festival and event safety

Festivals, outdoor concerts and local events are a big part of summer fun - but with large crowds, heat, long days and alcohol, it's important to look after yourself and your friends.

Before you go

  • Check the event website for safety advice and what you're allowed to bring
  • Pack essentials: suncream, hat, refillable water bottle, any medication you need, hand sanitiser, plasters
  • Arrange a meeting point in case you get separated from your group
  • Save emergency numbers in your phone and know where first aid points are on site

Staying safe at the event:

  • Drink plenty of water - especially in hot weather
  • Eat regularly and pace yourself if drinking alcohol
  • Stick with friends and look out for each other
  • Be aware of your surroundings - large crowds can become dangerous
Take breaks in the shade when needed
  • If using earphones or earplugs, take care when crossing roads or moving around

If you're drinking:

  • Know your limits
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with water
  • Never leave your drink unattended
  • If you feel unwell or too hot, seek medical help early - don't wait for things to get worse

Looking after others:

  • Keep an eye on friends and know when to get help
  • If someone collapses or becomes unresponsive, put them in the recovery position and call 999
  • If someone shows signs of heatstroke or severe intoxication, seek help from on-site medical teams or call for emergency help

When to call 999:

  • If someone is unconscious or unresponsive
  • If they're having difficulty breathing
  • If they show signs of heatstroke
  • If they have chest pain or symptoms of a stroke
  • If they've taken drugs and become very unwell
