Ambulance Service seeks Community First Responders in Somerset

Become a Community First Responder - Applications are now open and close on Sunday 16 November 2025.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is calling on passionate and dedicated individuals across Somerset to make a difference in their local communities by becoming Community First Responders (CFRs).

CFRs are trained volunteers who attend medical emergencies in their local area while an ambulance is on its way. They provide essential lifesaving care in those critical first few minutes, including CPR and defibrillation, often making a real difference to patient outcomes.

SWASFT is currently recruiting CFRs in priority areas, Nether Stowey, Porlock, Williton, Dulverton, Cheddar and Minehead. You don't need to live in these exact locations to apply, if you live nearby, you are welcome to submit an application.

Jane Whichello, Head of Volunteering and Community Services at SWASFT said; Community First Responders are a vital part of the chain of survival. Their swift response and commitment to their communities' help save lives every day.

We're looking for compassionate, reliable individuals who want to give back and support their neighbours in times of urgent need.

No previous medical experience is necessary - full training will be provided, along with uniform and you will be able to claim back mileage expenses. What's needed is a commitment to help others, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and the willingness to respond to emergencies in your area.

As a Community First Responder, you will:

  • Respond to 999 calls in your community
  • Provide immediate care, including basic life support
  • Work closely with the ambulance service
  • Make a real, positive impact on people's lives

This is a volunteer role with flexible hours that can fit around your lifestyle - ideal for those who live or work locally and want to contribute in a meaningful way.

Applications close on Sunday 16 November 2025.
